22 Nov Graham Bell picks St Anton as his no.1 ski resort
We all have a favourite ski resort, but did you know that Ski Sunday presenter and five-time Olympian Graham Bell’s favourite is St Anton? The technical advisor on Channel 4’s ‘The Jump’ picked St Anton in a recent interview in Fall Line Magazine.
Off-Piste & Ski Touring options
Graham loves the accessibility of the off-piste and ski touring options in St Anton. In the article, he remembers a day four years ago in December 2012 when he was in St Anton for the women’s World Cup Downhill.
‘A massive dump of snow…’
“A massive dump of snow had cancelled the day’s training run, but the weather was clearing.” Graham hiked up a ridge with co-presenter Ed Leight for an hour to access the east-facing couloirs above the Mattun itinerary.
Rock, paper, scissors
“We played rock, paper, scissors for the first line,” said Bell. He doesn’t say if it was best of three, but Ed won and took the centre line. Graham went skier’s right via a small gully.
Favourite with freeriders
Graham isn’t the only professional skier who loves St Anton. Swedish freerider Reine Barkered also picked the Tirolean resort as his favourite.
Great terrain
Reine loves the terrain in St Anton as it has everything from ‘high alpine to pillow lines’: “I love places where you can bomb down and send a huge drop,” said the Swede.
Great Lift Access
British freestyle skier Paddy Graham also loves the Arlberg region. “It’s a huge ski area with great lift access and something for all weather and conditions.”
