HELI-SKIING

Heli-skiing is the ultimate ski experience. With no lifts in sight, you’ll be whisked up a mountain in order to enjoy stunning scenery and fresh, untracked snow with no one else around. For many avid skiers and boarders, heli-skiing is the ultimate buzz.

You don’t have to be an expert skier to enjoy heli-skiing, you just need to be comfortable skiing in powder snow; the whole experience is a very special one indeed.

We can organise heli-skiing in destinations around the world and in keeping with our excellent levels of service, we would only recommend places that we have personally experienced and have the trust of reputable guides and friends.

There is already a tremendous amount of accessible off piste in and around the Arlberg (when you take the right guide!), so why heli-ski? With access to two stunning locations and peaks only reached by helicopter; Mehlsack and Schneetail, you will enjoy peace, quiet and stunning skiing all the way to the Zug valley. Heli-skiing in the Arlberg region is perfect for first timers wanting a great day out, thanks to the relaxed and steady pitch.

Heli-skiing details for the Arlberg region:

  • Either ski to the pick up point in Zurs, or be picked up from the highest point in Lech
  • Available Monday – Friday (no flying on weekends in Austria)
  • Prices from £160 per person, based on four people with a guide and one heli drop
  • A guide is imperative for safety reasons (Kaluma will recommend an excellent and experienced guide)

Our top recommendation for European heli-skiing.

Verbier is a spectacular off-piste playground, but once the accessible parts of the mountain have been tracked out, it really is an amazing experience to be collected by one of Air Glaciers twin engined helicopters and flown to the top of a remote peak and guided down the open powder fields, skiing across and adjacent to, awe inspiring glaciers.

Heli-skiing details in Verbier:

  • Available any day, subject to weather and snow conditions
  • Various drop points, suitable for good novices to expert skiers
  • The drop point may be requested in advance, but the guide and pilot will have the final say after making an assessment of the group’s ability and conditions on the day
  • A guide is imperative for safety reasons (Kaluma will recommend an excellent and experienced guide)

Heli-skiing is illegal across France, however, a short flight in a helicopter, departing from Courchevel 1850 and arriving in the Aosta Valley in Italy, opens up a variety of “drops” for differing abilities.

The majority of heli-skiing in Italy is in the Val d’Aoste: Val Grisenche – La Thuile and Monte Rosa (4633m). You can find the biggest vertical drop in Europe, extreme skiing, couloirs and glaciers but you need to go when the snow is good. Val Grisenche has its own micro-climate meaning you shouldn’t rely on the snow cover in neighbouring regions for its conditions. The guide will always be on hand to make these decisions for you.

Heli-skiing details when staying in Courchevel 1850:

  • Available any day, subject to weather and snow conditions
  • Various drop points, suitable for good novices to expert skiers
  • The drop point may be requested in advance, but the guide and pilot will have final say after making and assessment of the the group’s ability and conditions on the day
  • A guide is imperative for safety reasons (Kaluma will recommend an excellent and experienced guide)

Val D’Aran – Spanish Pyrenees

We had the pleasure of heli-skiing with our local partners, Kabi, in this seemingly endless area of diverse terrain. Possibly one of the only areas in Europe where you can land the helicopter anywhere you can see! As long as the pilot can land, then you can get out and ski! Over 400 sqkms. of skiable terrain awaits you in this extremely special area of the Pyrenees.

Following equipment checks and a briefing from our Kabi guides you are taken to the heli port at the bottom of the valley. Here you are picked up by highly skilled pilots and whisked off to fresh untracked snow. Just you, your guide and nature.

This area is also ideal for first timers to experience the thrill and beauty of heli-skiing. Our guides will choose the best runs to suit your ability and the helicopter is always there to pick you up and take you to the next descent.

Helirando:

For a little more adventure, try Helirando – or heli-touring. The helicopter drops you at an accessible peak and you begin your ski. From a chosen point you strap on your skins and begin to ski tour to a peak where the helicopter can’t land.

From here your guide chooses the descent, either to be picked up by the chopper for another run, to another point for another tour or all the way down to the valley below!

A fantastic experience that requires a good level of fitness.
