20 Mar Spring Snow, Sunshine, Stags and Still More Time to Come and Play!
Spring has Sprung Early in The Arlberg
After nearly two and half months of cold, snowy white weather and some of the deepest powder the Arlberg can remember for many many a year, spring has reared it’s sunny head and the last two weeks have been glorious.
Spring conditions to perfection. Beautiful sunshine, crisp firm snow in the mornings, with afternoon spring snow leading it to a bit of late afternoon slush!
But for those that really want to ski the fresh stuff, there has been plenty of it out there. You just need to find it!
Without a doubt the best snow can be found by touring or hiking and the safest way is to take out one of the guides from one of the many great ski school / guiding companies in the Arlberg. Only a 30 – 40 min hike away and you find some stunning fresh snow, powder enough to get your face shots and look good on the camera…..and a great bit of exercise too!
As the weather got warmer, the touring became a little longer, the snow changed to more of the spring or firn snow conditions and it’s important to time it right, getting to the faces and bowls, just as the sun softens the surface….allowing for great skiing!
We’re currently looking after a Stag Party at the moment in St Anton….and they asked us to organise a full on day with a few surprises thrown in.
We took them skiing with our very own Kaluma Guide, in fresh overnight snow (and a bit of a white out), but a good group ski with a few schnapps chucked in along the way. The stag was dressed in a rather unflattering 1980’s all-in-one suit, much to most peoples amusement! Lunch at the Hospiz Alm in St Christoph, with an excellent lunch banquet of roasted duck, wings and ribs, topped off with a tour of the wine cellar and 6 or 7 magnums of lovely white wine! A bit more of a fun ski to the Krazy Kanguruh, some more drinks, some traditional après ski dancing and most people seemed to just about make it to ski down in the dark afterwards. Dinner wasn’t needed….just the beds! Another great party organised by Kaluma and great fun had by all!
With so much snow in the early part of the season, the base is still firmly set and despite the warm temperatures, we still have plenty of snow around….helped by a dusting or two over the past few days. At Kaluma Travel we still have some great availability for the end of the season snow, which we are sure will be fine, right up until the lifts close on the 22ndApril. Spring snowing if you have never experienced it is excellent. A good mornings ski followed by a relaxing afternoon on a sun terrace, a great lunch and maybe a nice bottle of rose as well….?
At the Villa Montfort we can offer some excellent rates for a luxury chalet to cover weekend, or mid week stays.
Also not forgetting the rest of the Alps and enjoy cruising the stunning pistes of the 3 Valleys in Couchevel at our very own Maisonnee A / B
So if you like to ski, relax, enjoy the snow and the sun and come back with a healthy tan and a glow, then spring skiing is just for you!
