17 Oct Service as “normal” for Kaluma Travel this winter…
After an INCREDIBLE snow season in Winter 2017/18, expectations are high for more of the same this winter!
As the Winter season fast approaches and the final tweaks are being made to our plans for the season ahead, there are a lot of changes afoot in the wider market. There are some new chalets on the market, mostly luxurious ones, yet there are many companies that are heading for the trenches and removing the uncertainty by dropping chalet properties from their portfolios, or worse, reducing their staffing numbers to compensate.
The dreaded “B” word has struck fear into a lot of operators and the year for consolidation is seemingly upon us. Consolidating stock, consolidating staff, and compromising on service.
The “traditional chalet ski holiday” was of course a very British thing, however it has now reached out extensively into the global ski market. Despite this, most operators of ski chalets are still run through UK based companies. It is fair testament to a robust industry that only some operators have chosen to close their doors amidst the ever increasing costs and changing landscape. That said, the reduction of the supply will be felt as the limited stock will inevitably run out.
So what’s changed?
Many chalet operators, from budget to luxury are changing their model, particularly in France. No longer will you be offered six nights of gourmet catering, most have reduced to five evenings or less. Or are offering a more basic bed and breakfast model, sold as a ‘flexible’ model, it is of course simply a reduced service to save the operator money. Some operators are even trialling frozen ready meals in their chalets. Oh the very thought of it!
Alternatively, some operators are offering a “bolt on” method. The base price of your chalet rental looks great, but the reality, when you have added on hot breakfasts, afternoon teas, four course dinners and private chefs , unlimited drinks and a driver service, then suddenly the holiday is at an even greater premium cost and with a less experienced team onsite.
Sound confusing? Well it definitely is.
